Dr Paul Annells brings over 25 years of dedicated experience in skin cancer medicine to his practice at the Warner, Toombul, and Mitchelton Skin Cancer Clinics.He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Flinders University in 1993, became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2000, and completed a Master of Medicine in Skin Cancer in 2011.
Since beginning his skin cancer training in 2000, he has developed extensive expertise in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of skin cancers.
Over the course of his career, Dr Annells has undertaken advanced training in dermoscopy and skin cancer surgery, and has mentored more than 12 rural doctors undertaking advanced rural skills training. He also provides skin cancer training to GPs in South Australia and Brisbane, sharing his knowledge and experience to strengthen the wider medical community.
Surgical Expertise
Dr Annells is recognised for his advanced surgical skills, particularly in moderate complexity facial reconstructions. His capabilities include:
- Full‑thickness and partial‑thickness skin grafts
- Flap surgery techniques such as advancement, rotation, and transposition flaps
- Specialised myocutaneous flaps for nasal tip reconstruction
- Wedge excision and vermillionectomy for lip cancers
- Cosmetic wound closure using dermal sutures to minimise visible scarring
Commitment to Ongoing Development
A member of the Skin Cancer College of Australia and New Zealand and an accredited skin cancer doctor with the Skin Cancer College. Dr Annells has participated in clinical research including a reseach paper published in 2021 (skin microbiopsy for DNA markers of skin cancer), Dr Annells regularly attends professional meetings and training to remain at the forefront of skin cancer medicine. His long‑standing commitment to the Toombul and Northern Brisbane communities led to the establishment of the Toombul and Mitchelton Melanoma Scan clinics in 2005 and 2006, and the Warner Melanoma Scan clinic in 2019.
