Wedge excision is a technique used to remove cancers from the edge of the lip, ear or eyelid.
It involves a full thickness wedge of tissue being removed and repaired with sutures to restore a normal appearance. Wedge excisions can be difficult to do well due to the need to repair multiple layers to maintain normal appearance and function of the structure.
Example of Wedge Excision
Below is an example of a wedge excision of a skin cancer from the lip. Dissolving sutures were used to repair both dermal (deeper) layers of the skin and the underlying muscle, with nylon to repair the skin and soft silk sutures inside the mouth.
