On 14th June 2025, Melanoma Scan welcomed internal and external doctors to our Toombul Clinic for the Skin Surgery Workshop presented by Dr Paul Annells. Designed for doctors working in skin cancer medicine, this session focused on strengthening core surgical techniques and bridging the gap between theory and practice.

An Intermediate-Level Skills Program

The workshop provided an in-depth look at essential surgical procedures for diagnosing and treating skin cancers.

The program covered:

  • Surgical anatomy and skin lines – understanding how to work with natural skin contours for optimal healing and aesthetics.
  • Shave and punch biopsies – when and how to use each method for accurate diagnosis.
  • Local anaesthetic blocks – ensuring patient comfort and procedural efficiency.
  • Large elliptical excisions – mastering precision and minimising scarring.
  • Advanced suturing techniques – improving wound closure outcomes.
  • Rotation and advancement flaps – reconstructive techniques for challenging defects.
  • Wound care and dressing selection – optimising recovery and reducing complications.
  • Medicare and billing – navigating procedural item numbers.
  • Non-Medicare income opportunities – diversifying practice offerings.

Interactive and Practical Learning

Participants benefited from hands-on demonstrations and the opportunity to ask targeted questions. Real-world examples were discussed, helping attendees address challenges faced in everyday clinical practice.
