On 26th July 2025, Melanoma Scan hosted an advanced Skin Surgery Workshop at our Toombul Clinic, led by experienced skin cancer practitioner Dr Paul Annells. This professional development opportunity brought together both internal and external doctors to refine and expand their surgical skills in skin cancer treatment.

A Focus on Advanced Surgical Techniques

The workshop went beyond the basics, delving into a range of advanced procedures and practical skills essential for doctors working in skin cancer medicine.

Key topics included:

  • Surgical anatomy and skin lines – understanding the natural lines of the skin to achieve optimal surgical and cosmetic results.
  • Local anaesthetic blocks – ensuring effective pain management during procedures.
  • Modified rhombi flaps – a versatile surgical technique for closing complex wounds.
  • Myocutaneous flap repair for the nose – restoring both function and appearance in delicate areas.
  • Full-thickness grafts – when and how to apply this advanced repair method.
  • Wound care and dressing selection – promoting faster healing and reducing complications.
  • Medicare and billing processes – navigating procedural item numbers.
  • Non-Medicare income opportunities – exploring additional revenue streams in skin cancer practice.

Hands-On Learning and Practical Demonstrations

Throughout the session, Dr Annells demonstrated surgical techniques, giving attendees the opportunity to observe and discuss best-practice approaches. This interactive format encouraged questions, allowing doctors to troubleshoot real-world challenges they encounter in clinical settings.
