The Essential Role of Our Nursing Team and Medical Assistant

Our nurses and medical assistant play a pivotal role in the services provided at Melanoma Scan. From assisting with procedures to educating patients on aftercare, they ensure that our practice runs smoothly and that patients feel comfortable and informed. Some of the primary responsibilities our nurses undertake include:

• Assisting with Procedures
  From routine biopsies to excisions, our nurses and medical assistants work alongside our doctors, ensuring every procedure is handled safely and effectively. Their support allows our doctors to perform procedures smoothly, enhancing patient comfort and care.
• Post-Operative and Wound Care
  After procedures, our team provides vital post-operative care, including cleaning and dressing wounds, removing sutures, and educating patients on aftercare to promote healing and prevent infection. Karie Anne, our medical assistant, also plays an essential role in bedside assistance and wound care.
• Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) and Medication Support
  While our registered and endorsed enrolled nurses administer PDT and medications with the doctor’s guidance, our medical assistant, Karie Anne, provides bedside support, managing patient comfort and documentation.
• Scheduling and Follow-Up Care
  Our team organises follow-up care, scheduling appointments for patients diagnosed with skin cancers or monitored lesions. This helps ensure patients stay on track with their treatment and follow-up needs.
• Maintaining Accurate Records
  Each member of our team meticulously documents patient interactions and care plans, maintaining precise and up-to-date records critical to patient safety and continuity of care.

Supporting Skin Checks and Patient Education

During comprehensive skin checks, our doctors examine patients for suspicious moles or lesions, sometimes using a dermatoscope to get a closer look. In cases where patients are at higher risk of skin cancer, our Heine device captures images of lesions, allowing us to monitor changes over time. When a biopsy is required, our team are on hand to assist with procedures such as shave, punch, and excisional biopsies.

If a diagnosis of skin cancer is confirmed, our nursing team supports patients through every stage, from arranging excision or cryotherapy to guiding them through aftercare. Treatment options vary depending on the case and may include excision, cryotherapy, topical chemotherapy agents, or PDT. Our nurses take the time to ensure patients are well-prepared for their treatment and educated on how to care for themselves afterwards.

Beyond Skin Cancer Treatment

In addition to skin cancer treatment, our nursing team assist in the removal of benign lesions, cysts, facial vessels, and other minor cosmetic treatments. They are dedicated to providing quality care that extends beyond skin cancer, addressing various dermatological needs to help patients feel comfortable in their skin.
